DISTRESS MARKS & INDENTATIONS
Many styles of furniture are designed to include distress marks such as, stain or paint splatters, random indentations or other markings. These distress marks are put in at the factory and are there to give our piece of furniture an antique or well-worn appearance.
¤ TABLE FILLS & LEAVES.
If your table does not have a built-in storage for your leaves, store them on a flat surface, such as under your bed or on a closet floor. This can help to prevent warping. Always have someone help to install and remove the leaves.
¤ MOVING TABLES.
Always have at least two people pick up a dining table to move it. Pushing or pulling it may damage the legs or base.
¤ FORMICA TABLE SURFACES.
Clean plastic laminate (Formica) tables with a slightly damp cloth. Never allow excessive moisture in the cracks of your table. If a spill occurs, pull your tabletop apart and dry all edges on the top and the leaves. This will prevent the laminate from separating from the substrate.
UNIQUE CHARACTERISTICS
Certain trees have unique characteristics that set them apart from others. They may have natural marks such as knots, mineral streaks and gum pockets. For example, gum pockets are often found in cherry solids and veneers. These marks have no effect on the durability or quality of the furniture. They are merely proof that it is indeed real wood.
CARING FOR WOOD
AVOID DIRECT SUNLIGHT.
Constant exposure to the ultraviolet rays in sunlight may lighten the finish over time.
AVOID EXTREMES.
Very high and low humidity or temperatures may cause solid wood to warp and/or split and veneers to come loose. Extremely high humidity may also produce a haze on some finishes. By using an air conditioner in summer and a dehumidifier in winter, you can minimize these problems. Position wood furniture at least 6 inches away from any heat source.
AVOID SOLVENTS.
Perfumes, hair sprays, fingernail polish and remover will cause a chemical reaction and permanently damage most finishes.
AVOID PLASTIC AND RUBBER MATERIALS.
Placing plastic or rubber articles directly on wood furniture may cause a chemical reaction that will leave a permanent mark or stain.
USE FELT PADS.
Self-adhesive felt pads under decorative accessories will help avoid scratches.
REGULAR DUSTING.
It is best to use a soft, 100% cotton cloth moistened with a wax-free polish. The polish helps to prevent hairline scratches that often occur with dusting. Apply the polish to the cloth, don't spray the polish onto the wood surface. This will cause a hazy buildup.
EASY TO OPEN DRAWERS.
To keep your drawers operating freely, run a bar of soap or paraffin on the wooden drawer glides and on the two bottom edges of the drawer. When re-installing the drawer, be sure they are set properly on the glides.
LIFT TO MOVE.
Always lift your furniture to move it, do not drag it. You should take apart your bed before you try to move it to prevent damage to the headboard, foot board and/or rails. Furniture “mover” glide pads are available for ease in moving your furniture. Ask your sales associate if you have any questions.
LEVEL YOUR FURNITURE.
For doors to hang straight and drawers to work properly, your wood furniture must be level. Most floors are not completely level and some floor coverings may vary in thickness. Many pieces come with adjustable leveler legs. For those that do not, placing a small shim or wedge under one leg will usually correct the problem.
CARE & MAINTENANCE OF DINING TABLES
AVOID MOISTURE.
Excess moisture will quickly damage a tabletop by penetrating the finish and raising the grain. Use a slightly damp cloth to clean the tabletop and DRY it immediately with a dry cloth. Blot up spills at once.
PREVENT DAMAGE.
Protect wood tabletops from dents, scratches and spills by using a custom-fitted table pad, place mats or coasters. A quality table pad will also protect the finish from marks caused by hot pans or dishes. Your salesperson will be glad to give you information on how to order a table pad from The Ohio Table Pad Company.
